About MAC (MEPs Against Cancer) |
Who we are
MAC (MEPs Against Cancer) is an all-party informal group of MEPs committed to promoting action on cancer as an EU priority and harnessing European health policy to that end. MAC was initiated by the European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC) which provides the Secretariat.
What we can do
Cancer rates are set to increase dramatically due to Europe’s ageing population. MAC can support cancer patients by:
- Sending a strong political signal that immediate and concerted action is needed to reduce cancer rates and improve cancer outcomes.
- Harnessing Community policies and instruments such as the Public Health Programmes and the Framework Research Programmes to the fight against cancer. We want to prevent those cancers that can be prevented and give patients the best chance, with early detection and best quality of treatment and care.
- Promoting publicity and information campaigns around the European Code Against Cancer.
- Ensuring that best practice is shared across the EU and gaps that exist in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care between and within Member States are eradicated.
- Insisting that the Council Recommendation on Cancer Screening is implemented at national level and good practice guidelines are developed.
- Promoting cancer research.
MAC Statement
At the first MAC Conference, held at 22 March in Brussels at the European Parliament, the MAC MEPs, from a wide range of political groups and countries, put their signatures to a MAC statement calling on all European Health Ministers to take steps to combat the onsiderable inequalities in health and cancer survival rates within Member States and across the European Union.
