First MAC Conference held on 22 March 2006 in the European Parliament

The MAC initiative endorsed a call for action at their first conference, which was attended by EU Commisioner for Health, Markos Kyprianou as well as several MEPs from a wide range of political parties and countries.

The statement called for a Cancer Task Force to be set up at a European level to galvanise the fight against cancer, and called on national Health miniters to take a number of urgent steps to improve cancer preventtion, screening and treatment, and reducing glaring inequalities in mortality from cancer across Europe.

Commissioner Kyprianou recently pointed out that the male life expectancy in Estonia and Latvia is a full 12 years shorter than in Sweden. Lung cancer kills twice as many people in Hungary as in Finland. (Photo: On the left Commissioner Kyprianou at the MAC Conference)
